To build Gerione (Geryon) – Dante’s beast widely codified both in literature and in visual arts – I combined five elements from original miniatures‚ chosen among thousands that have been digitalized by important internationals biblioteques.
The “peculiar” elements of the Geryon allow therefore shaping a new one‚ which nevertheless carries intact all the strength and the arcane eloquence that is peculiar of medieval images.
The Geryon in Dante’s Comedy represents frauds. Through the use of anamorphosis‚ “this” Geryon arranged on a XVIII century monumental staircase is visible in its real proportions only from one particular point of view‚ which is that the observer has once he/she reaches the top of the stairs.
Initially the viewer believes mastering the image and observing it in its real measure‚ but he/she will realise being defrauded only once he/she has passed the beast‚ which will have ferried him/her at the end of the stairs despite his/her will.
