Locus Amoenus
2008
The title, on which the meaning of this work is pivoted, is derived from the literary topos of the Locus Amoenus contained in Virgil’s Bucolics. Locus amoenus means a part of the woods – whose constitutive elements are literary well codified – which is the perfect momentum for creativity and at the same time the dimension in which Man can find measure and integrity typical of his deep nature.
The locus amoenus is generally a private dimension, in which Man interacts with himself and with Nature‚ instead of interacting with other individuals.
This installation will combine a series of private spheres, bringing them closer‚ and making them interact – in some cases ideally referring also to Shakespeare’s meaning of locus amoenus as place of free sensual turmoil – but without shattering their intimacy.
The intent is the extension of oneself to the comprehension – term intended in its semantic ambivalence – of what surrounds us and what is instead contained in each own imagination and temperament.
A gentle exploration that can lead us back to the paradise lost of constructive interaction‚ and accomplice‚ with the self and the other-then-self.
